The 6th University Convocation of the B.S. Abdur Rahman University, earlier known as Crescent Engineering College was held on 27th November 2016. 694 students have earned their degree this year from the University.
This University was started in the year 1984 as a Muslim Minority Self Financing Engineering College with just 3 branches of engineering programmes at the Undergraduate level; 25 years later, this Deemed University comprises of 22 departments, grouped under 10 different Schools, 19 Undergraduate programmes, 29 postgraduate programmes and Ph.D. in all the Departments. MOUs have been signed with leading International and National Institutions and Industries, including Purdue University, State University of New York, Curtin University, Deakin University, Queens University & Plymouth University for collaborative research and other academic related activities.
The University has been rated with “A” grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in the very first Cycle of Assessment in April 2014.The University is ranked 54th among 3000+ engineering institutions under National Institutional Ranking Framework of Government of India. It is ranked 15th among private engineering institutions across the country, ranked 3rd in Tamilnadu in the category of Teaching- Learning & resources and ranked 20th in the All India ranking.
In his Welcome address the Vice Chancellor Prof. V.M Periasamy said that, “the B. S. Abdur Rahman University is committed to provide a three dimension Higher Education viz., Quality Teaching, Innovative Research and Appropriate application of knowledge through extension, outreach and consultancy activities. We have realized from our experience that besides a sound foundation and knowledge in their core areas, an employer is looking for knowledge, skills and attitude beyond their main specializations in a student.”
“At present the university has 370 teaching faculty of whom 140 are Ph.Ds. with a target to reach 100% faculty with Ph.D in the next 5 years. The University faculty members are associated with a number of sponsored research projects both from industry as well as from government agencies such as DST, DRDO, CSIR, NRB, MNRE, UGC, AICTE, etc. 29 projects are ongoing at a cost of Rs 564 lakhs and 30+ projects worth Rs 384 lakhs have been completed. “
The Chief Guest Mr. Mohan Narayanaswamy in his convocation address said “Students should learn to adapt to the current market requirements always be willing to change, challenge the conventional wisdom and do something different. For one ought to be successful, he has to have bird’s eye view and worm’s eye view in all that he does”. He further stated that “irrespective of one’s discipline it is important to be IT savy has it is integral part of any discipline today”. He remained the students “success, fame and money will always follow if one is committed to work hard where ever he is.”
Mr. N. Balakrishnan, President – Fasteners & Hot Forgings, Sundram Fasteners Ltd. In his special address stated that “The only way to achieve excellence is by industry – institution interaction.
